Bach Two-Part Inventions
No.8 in F Major (BWV 779)



Bach originally entitled the Inventions in two parts "Praeambula", and no more than four sharps and flats are used in the fifteen keys chosen. Though Bach wrote the Inventions with a clear pedagogical purpose in mind, they are exceptional examples of compositional craftsmanship.

They sound with great effect on the piano and indeed there has been a long and important tradition of pianists playing them - Beethoven owned a copy of the Inventions, which he studied assiduously, Chopin taught them to his pupils, and Mendelssohn performed them, along with the Well-Tempereed Clavier, to his idol Goethe.
