Believing in the Lotus Sutra is that you realize that the eternal Buddha Shakyamuni is always giving teachings for you. Therefore, you need to make a connection with the eternal Buddha Shakyamuni by chanting Daimoku first of all. This is the most important and the first step of all practice. If you don't have this faith first, all your good deeds will be hypocrisies. Chanting Daimoku is not the only ultimate practice of the Lotus Sutra. The important practice is that you strive in this world, adoring the Buddha Shakyamuni as your father, teacher and the lord. You should chant Daimoku for that. Please get the protection from good deities, and prove that you are one of true disciples of the Buddha Shakyamuni.
Kanjin honzon sho
The heart of this essential section of the Lotus Sutra, the five-character of gNamu Myo-ho ren-ge kyoh was not transmitted even to the most trusted disciple such as bodhisattvas Manjusri or Medicine King, and certainly not the lower-ranking bodhisattvas. Instead the Buddha called out numerous bodhisattvas from underground, for whom He expounded it during the preaching of eight chapters, and entrusted them.
The Honzon is the most venerable scene that the Eternal Buddha is transmitting "Namu Myo-ho ren-ge kyo" to His original disciples. (NOPPA D2, P148)
The gist of these passages is that the Buddha's practice as the cause and His virtue as the effect are altogether contained in the five characters of "Myo-ho ren-ge kyo". If we uphold the five characters, the merits of those cause and effect are naturally transferred to us. (NOPPA D2, P146)
The Buddha called out great bodhisattvas from underground to entrust them with task of transmitting the five characters of gMyo-ho ren-ge kyoh, the essence of gThe Life Span of the Buddhah chapter, to people in this world. (NOPPA D2, P155)
gThis excellent medicineh refers to Namu Myoho renge kyoh, which is the essence of the chapter, gThe Life of Span of the Buddha,h and which contains the five major principles: the name, entity, quality, function, and teachings. The Buddha did not grant this excellent medicine to those bodhisattvas who had been guided by the teachings of the theoretical section, not to mention bodhisattvas from other world. ( NOPPA D2, P157)
Having thus manifested the ten divine powers, Shakamuni Buddha transmitted
the five characters of gMyo-ho ren-ge kyoh to the original disciples who
sprang up from underground.
To sum up, all the dharma of the Buddha, all the unrestricted divine powers of the Buddha, all the most secretly treasured teachings of the Buddha, and all the profundity of the Buddha are clearly revealed and explained in this Lotus Sutra. (NOPPA D2, P158)
Then for the first time those bodhisattvas from underground appear in this world attempting to encourage ignorant people to take the five characters of gMyo-ho ren-ge kyoh. Because it means gSlanderers of the True Dharma, the Lotus Sutra, will fall into hell but they will inevitably be saved by having heard Daimoku of the Lotus Sutra.
My disciple, think deeply! The countless bodhisattvas who had sprung up from underground were disciples of Lord Shakamuni Buddha ever since the time He had first resolved to seek Buddhahood. (NOPPA D2, P162)
For those who are incapable of understanding the truth of gThe 3,000 existence
contained in one thought,h Lord Shakamuni Buddha, with His great compassion,
wraps this jewel with the five characters of gMyo-ho ren-ge kyoh and hangs
it around the neck of the ignorant in the Latter Age of Degeneration. (NOPPA
D2, P164)
Daimoku is a close bond of affection from the eternal Buddha Shakyamuni.
And you should contemplat Daimoku as all teachings of the Buddha Shakyamuni
have been condensed into
