Grip

The correct grip allows you good casting .

The correct grip
This picture is the correct grip . The reel leg should be set between the middle finger and the third finger . And...

A : Put the thumb on the front grip .

B : Control the line by the forefinger . ( Of course , you don't have to stretch your forefinger like this picture when you are reeling ... )

C : Relax the middle finger .

D : Fix the third finger and the little finger .

C and D keep the wrist flexible . It is common on the other sports .

Wrong grip
Some anglers grip like this . It is not stable . The forefinger cannot reach the spool .

This is not good too
Although some Japanese anglers recommend this grip , it's wrong too .

Remember the C and D . The third finger and the little finger cannot fix . They will be hurt .

Some anglers are gripping like this , because the forefinger cannot reach the spool . But it is defect of the reels in the most cases .

The thumb
Many Japanese anglers cast with the double hand , although the rods are shorter than 6 feet . The cause is this picture .

The thumb is not on the front grip . Because the rod cannot be stopped on the end of back-swing , the left hand become to be needed . It is difficult to swing straight also .

Picking-up the line
The line should be picked up on the tip of the forefinger . If you pick up the line on the first joint , you cannot release smoothly .

Line control
It is same technic of " thumbing " on the bait reels .

It is necessary for adjusting the distance , silent presentation , prevention to line-troubles . So , the correct grip and correct reels is important .

I had read these method in a fishing book when I was a junior high school student . My casting was improved by it .

The self-taught grip is not good . Learn the grip of this page . (2004/8/3)
