Classic line spinning

"Classic line" and "Sporty line" are the two design lines by Abu Garcia on mid 80's. "Classic line" had old ABU's classic image. "Sporty line" was designed by Henry Dreyfuss design consultant in New York. This Cardinal C siries was a only "Classic line spinning reel".

CardinalC‚R
Cardinal C series was made of the image of old 33/44 and of modern skirted spool construction. Line-up were C3/C4/C5 and high-speed C4X. Right/Left retreve. First model had green/gold name plates. First Abu Garcia presented this project to Hyoshi-sangyo. But Kenji Hara who was an engineer of Hyoshi refused it. He knew its design defect. The hole of C3's pinion was too large, so the bottom of gear teeth deformed the hole. So this model was made by Mizuho in Nagoya Japan.

Worm Gear
Worm gear (Screw gear). Smooth and durable. But this gear needs precision parts and technic of building for smoothness. Lassi who was technical manager of Abu Garcia lost his summer holiday of 5 weeks by inspection of this model. He said "I will be killed by my family !". The oscilation was slower than 33/44. So its rotation was stable. Silent A/R has large "play". But it does not block forfinger during casting.

Bail spring
This is biggest mystery. The gears had excellent durability. But this bail spring did not have enough durability. These reels would spoil many angler's trips by sudden breaking. 33/44 had two bail springs. I could not understand why Abu used such weak spring.
