Reel Oils

Although there are many kinds of oils in stores , the performance of them are different .

All-round oil vs. genuine oil
I tested the performance of all-round oil and genuine oil of fishing reel .
WD-40 is a popular all-round oil in US .
The smaller oil of this picture is Shimano's reel oil sold in Japan .

Samples
I tested these oils by the ball-bearing of Shimano's spinning reel's line guides .
I removed the lubes of them perfectly for 20 min and applied WD-40 and Shimano's oil .

1 Soaking in salt water
I soaked the roller guides in salt water for 1 min . This salt water includes twice salt of sea water .
2 Winding
I wound the line of 50m . The salt water goes into the bearings .

3 Repeating
They were dried for 24 hours after 50 cycles of " 1 " and " 2 " .
This test was repeated for 5 days .

4 Result
The bearing with WD-40 stack . Shimano's oil didn't stick .

5 Rust
The left is WD-40 . The right is Shimano . The bearing of WD-40 rusted .

6 Moreover...
The difference of performance is not only the anti-rust but also the anti-freeze .
This picture shows the oils with the refrigerator of 8 degrees C . WD-40 is frozen .
If you use WD-40 on the one-way clutch of your reel , the anti-reverse doesn't work in cold weather .

The genuine oil is the best for your fishing reel ! (2004/3/15)
