Mitchell 300 series ended in 2000. But I have been thinking that it should be revived until now.
I show how to revive 308 now, if I produce it.
The spool of 308 should be same to old type. 300 series sold 250000 in the world. So, many anglers will become happy.
Material is PA and glass or carbon fiber.
The surface should be consider for smoothness and castability.
70's shallow spool of plastic is match the present Japanese market. But Japanese anglers like aluminum spool.
Two of PA/GF spools for US and other market. A PA/GF spool and a aluminum spool for Japanese market.
Old system is simple and good. But the washer should be changed to felt and its diameter should be enlarged a little.

Rotor should be redesigned. Original 300 series use the same die for the left hand models and the right hand models. So, dynamic balance cannot be balanced.
Two pivots of bail arm should be off-set like Ohmori Comet and Cardinal 33/44.
This bail arm is zinc die-cast. It should be changed to plastic. Plastic is lighter than zinc. Although some people like metallic parts blindly, it is not correct selection.
And, this bail arm has the problem which the line hangs on roller collar. So, its should be redesigned.
Bail arm nut should be designed like 33/44, bacause the line hangs on it.
The teeth or thread locker should be used on the nut.
The spring of right was changed to the left in 90's. This must be backed to right.
Test for durability should be done thoroughly.
The member of Mitchell who has done this crazy change is GUILTY !
This type is good to prevent line twist. But it is hard to make. It become "harf opened" easily, when the wire is deformed. The roller is supported directry by steel pin. So, I don't choice this.
The roller should be tested about line twists thoroughly. It should be also done after durability test, because the angle changes.
BB big roller !? You had better use Stella.
This is the spiral-beveled gears on 70's 408. Although it is smooth, its cost is too high.
Perhaps, the slackness is made for prevention gear noise. But I want fixing the slackness. If it become smooth by changing the module, I use this type.
Teeth of these gears are 10 and 49. If these are changed 10 and 43, these become smooth. I think it is not wrong. But 4.3:1 cannot be sold by spec.
Teeth of these gears are 9 and 47. 9 and 46 or 9 and 44 may be good also and smoother. 9 and 45 cannot be used. It cannot wind flat on CW. Moreover 9 and 45 is 1:5.0. So, a tooth of pinion touches only 5 teeth. It is not good for luburication and wearing. Shimano likes such ratio...
But durability of spiral face gears are unknown. So, I show 2 of example.
ex1: The last models of Olympic's surf spinning used this type. But it become rough soon.
ex2: We used this system on US salt spinning. Although it is not silky smooth, it is not wrong feeling. It was stable in quality. There are no repair. Customers ordered the model constantly.

Right is CW (Cross Wind). Left is Planamatic.
CW is troble-free. Planamatic is excellence on long cast.
Axial slackness of spool causes to line-trouble. So, it is important part.
I think this type is simple and light. But some reels were broken the teeth. Shock absorber may be good. But space may be not enough.

70's was 48mm. 80~90's was 53mm. 53mm is too long. It should be changed to 48mm.
Avocet 500 and 1000 are 50mm. Japanese 2000~2500 are 50mm. Daiwa's Japanese models are 45mm. So, 45~50mm are correct.
Shaft of knob is screwed to crank. Thread locker should be used. But too strong locker is wrong like IDEAL.
If the gears are straight face gears, I use this single thrust bearing. Double thrust is noisy.
I will use 2BB on pinion. Rotary joints of metal stumping machines use 2BB such way. So, this method is not wrong.
Use BB to all of bearing points !? You had better use Stella forever.
Pinion of old 308 was screwed to rotor. But it should be changed like present reels.
300 should be redesigned totally. Its 8 gears are too old. It should be changed to same system of 308.
Name shouldn't be disappeared. But engraving makes logo old type.
Whatever way, However cost, name shouldn't disappeare.
Instead of it, the printing on drag knob, rotor, side-cover will be do away with . These are not beautiful and will desappeared itself.
Push button is this type. 70's doesn't match this knob. 80's is wound the line.
But button should be chromed.
Why does Mitchell need 308 again ? Can you image Abu Garcia without round Ambassadeure ? If the round Ambassadeure were the reel which had many many defects like 80~90's 300 series, Abu Garcia could not keep their position in the tackle world.
Round Ambassadeure is the symbol of ABU. 300 is the symbol of Mitchell. The symbol makes brand image. It is good for other modern models.
