300&400

The 300 and 400 are the origin of MITCHELL spinning reels . I show my devices for them .

300&400
These are my 300C and 400 (400A) . This size was made at the beginning of MITCHELL spinning reels . It is the #3000 or #4000 size at present .

It is the most popular size in Europe .

Salt water seal
The water seal had been set between the housing and side-cover since 80's .

But it is deformed by pressure of the side-cover screws . Gearing becomes wrong by the deformation .

This problem had been left to the last of series . Ah...

My 400
I replaced the seal to the cartridge paper . It is more durable than the original .

The cartridge paper is oiled .

Because the cartridge paper is thinner than the original , the washer of the idle gear should be removed or decreased .

When the original seal becomes thinner , the rotation becomes tight . In this case , the washer should be decreased too .

When you reassemble it , don't touch the side-cover . The tapered head of the screw center the side-cover automatically .

Assembled .

The bail spring of 300C
I removed the pin of the bail arm . I set the L-point of the spring in the hole . Tripping becomes smooth . The life of spring maybe longer .

The winding shape
300&400 of 80's had the same problem as 308&408 in 80's . The line is wound " tapered " .
I set the friction washer on the front of the spool , and set the teflon washer on the behind of the spool . I don't use the brass washer .

If your reel makes tangle , try it .

The 300 was designed 50 years ago . It is minor model in Japan .

" The superior product for 10 years and supplying it for 20 years " was the motto of Citroen (?) . The 300 was the superior spinning reel for 10 years . But it was too long and too conservative .

But present reels become " old " by only a few years . It is interesting to use the 300 as an antithesis of such present reels and the destiny of the capitalism .
