Mitchell 302
The second model of Mitchell 300 family is 302.

Mitchell302

302 was born in early 50's. It was large salt water spinning reel. This picture is 70's model. 302 had been changed the internal mechanism from 300.

Spool diameter: 72mm
Weight: 557g
Ratio: 3.75

Its size is about #8000.

Spool

The spool is not push button type.

When the spool is turned in CW, the drag system works. When the spool is turned in CCW...

Removed

Its spool is removed by turning in CCW.

Its drag system is "one way". So, it is drag in CW and it is removable in CCW.

This system is good for the present reels too. How about it for Quartz and C600 and C700 ?

Line guide

Line guide is not roller. It is hard chromed. The first model was "half bail" and tungsten carbide guide.

PUM

Pick Up Manual was available.

Construction

The construction was changed from 300. The 8 gear was changed to a set of the beveled gears. The parts are symmetrical, because the right wind model is made from the same dies. It is same to 300.

Mechanism

The drive gear is aluminum alloy, the pinion is nickeled steel.

Planamatic oscillation is loaded.

CW converter

This is the part for conversion the planamatic to "Cross Wind".

Pinion and rotor

They are assembled the key.

Salt water seal 1

There is a seal under the rotor.

Salt water seal 2

Ball bearing is sealed the washer.

Lube port

Older version had the lube port on the side cover.

Some anglers say "Slow oscillation is good"in Japan. The others say "Fast oscillation is good".

Planamatic is slow oscillation. Cross wind is fast oscillation.

302 can become both.

This oscillation and lube port, which is loaded on Shimano's present models, are the same theme of the fishing reels until now.
