Bails
The bails of 308/408.

Variety of Bails
Fixed guide of tungsten carbide
This type was used for 308 until the 70s and 408 in the early stages.
It is light and simple, so the dynamic balance of rotor is good. But I replace it to newer type , because I am anxious for the abrasion of the lines. The old one was worn by the lines.
The right of picture is older type. It was stopped by the tripping lever.
Roller guide 1
This is the roller guide of the hard chrome plating which was used for 408 in the 70s and 308 A of the early stages.
It makes the line twist little as the present reels. It might have been a cause of 408 getting renown in Japan.
Some of bails of used reels were bent by manual closing. Such reels make the line twist.
Roller guide 2
This is the roller guide that the bail became partition. It was just a little used at the beginning of the 80s. The picture is parts of 4420. The bail of 4400 series was aluminum alloy. But 308/408's bails were hard chrome plated brass and steel.
The appearance is same as roller guide3. But the roller of this type did not have the bushing. The fixing of bolt is different point too.
Roller guide R
This type was used from the mid 80s to the last of 300 series.
Its wire and line-roller-support is one piece of stainless steel. How did MITCHELL make it ?!
The bail arm is chrome plated zinc.
The bush of polyacetal is inserted into its roller guide. So, its rotation is smooth. It is durable because the shaft of roller is stainless steel.
It makes twist little. But newer reel makes more twists because the groove of roller was made shallower from the end of 80's.
The epoxy of picture was made for anti-tangle by me.
I like this type best because it doesn't damage the lines.

Break of bail spring
70's reels
Although some anglers say that the bail spring of MITCHELL 308/408 is broken, I think it is the problem only on the older reels than 70's.
Because the opening angle of the older model is larger than the newer models, the spring is damaged.
Improved
The 80's models were improved this point by decreasing the opening angle. My reels of this type has not broken ever.
Measure
I make the opening angle narrower by shaving the bail arm.
Deformation
This is not the break of the bail spring. The cause is the deformation of bail wire.
Some anglers misunderstand it as the breaking of springs.
Because this bail is one piece, it should be carefully handled.
Before repairing, ascertain where has been deformed, because the bail arm part of the thin brass plate is weaker than the wire part.

All the types of bail arms have a merit and demerit like as a human because France is human country ?!@(2003/1/10)
