Mitchell 300
I show the internal mechanism of Mitchell 300.

Mitchell 300
Mitchell 300 is the first mass-produced spinning reel. It was born in 1947. It had been produced to 2000. This picture is 300C of `70's.

Spool dia is 50mm. Weight is 300g. Ratio is about 3.8. Its size is 3000~4000 of the present reels.

One-touch spool
The spool is changable easily by the push button. It is a good idea for the anglers by the anglers.

This concept still lives in 300X and Avocet.

Drag
Its simple. The spring is not the coil. The knob does not have the click. The drag washer is only one. But its performance is enough for fishing.

Only on the shallow spool of 300, the front washer is the teflon and the rear washer is the fiber. The other models are reverse.

Bail
The bail is made of the forged brass bail arm and the steel wire. The guides are the tungsten carbide and chromed roller. The photo is the roller guide. It is the hard chromed bronze. It supported by the stainless shaft.

Bail trip
It has the brake of 1. The 2 is the tripping point. It does not work by the reverse rotation.

This plate does not rotate. It has also the hole for oiling the tripping lever.

Gears
It has 8 gears. It looks like the watch. The reason is that the high-ratio beveled gears could not be made when it designed.

The power is transmitted by A, B, C, D. So, the rotor turns CCW.

The power for the oscillation is transmitted by a, b, c, d. d is the oscillating gear.

Oscillating system
The first perfect flat winding system in the world. It uses double rack and a pinion.

The backbone
The steel pipe is inserted the body. It supports the pinion and the main shaft separately. It is cut for the oscillation mechanism.

The pipe supports separately the frictions of the rotate and the oscillation.

The soft grease is better for 300 because the friction area is larger. I use Shimano's grease.

Asymmetry body
This design was born from these mechanism. It is inherited to 300X and Avocet series.

Lube port
It has the lube port on the end of its body. It is same idea of Shimano's "oil injection" and Daiwa's rear cap.

Lube hole on the main gear
The screw hole for the handle connects to the small hole on the shaft. The oil goes to the bearings with out taking apart the reel.

300C and 410 had the roller bearing on their main gear and rotor.

Great mechanism? No. It is the mechanism of 50 years ago.

The 8 gears are very noisy.

But you can fish with it.

Isn't it all right?

And I can say it is unique. Who thinks using 8 gears on a spinning reel now?

The backbone pipe is enthusiastic. It has the perfect level wind system also.

Only the France was able to make the such unique reel.
